Local places to eat

We’re blessed with quite a few good places to eat locally and a recent couple of evenings out made me think it’s worth listing a few as a thankyou. My favourite local places for an evening meal out (In no particular order)

  • The Basement, Ashbourne – Thai, friendly and relaxed
  • Bengal Cottage, Ashbourne – Indian, good value, friendly staff and a lively atmosphere
  • Red Chilli, Ashbourne – Indian, tasty and fresh food in a nice setting
  • Da Carlo, Ashbourne – Italian, wide ranging menu and a great atmosphere
  • Rose and Crown, Mayfield – good varied menu in a pub environment
  • Yeaveley Arms, Yeaveley and Saracens Head, Shirley – good British menu with lots of local ingredients – gastro-pub setting
  • Le Mistral, Wirksworth – French, lovely setting – prefer the tables upstairs
  • The George, Alstonefield -British menu with regularly local ingredients
  • The Loaf, Crich – a bakery but Wednesday Night is Pizza night
  • Elaichi, Belper – Indian, very friendly and great food
  • The Dapple Grey, Uttoxeter – Ok its a chain but good value and good beer

and if its not listed there’s a chance I haven’t tried it yet (e.g. the Dining Room) or that I have and didn’t like it. What other recommendations do you have?

  1. Thanks to correspondents adding the Coach and Horses in Fenny Bentley, the Red Lion in Kniveton and the Flower Cafe on the Market Square in Ashbourne. Places I’ve enjoyed in the past but not been recently include the Bowling Green Ashbourne, Shoulder of Mutton in Osmaston, and Red Lion Hognastion – anyone have any updates?
