10 things I like about Ashbourne: #5 Food and Drink: The Ashbourne Terroir

Ah…the Ashbourne terroir!

Where to begin. For a town the size of Ashbourne to have the range of pubs, restaurants and great produce is terrific. We have excellent delicatessens in Cheddar Gorge, and Bramalls (sadly, we lost H Smith this year). We have high dining at The Dining Room, low but excellent dining at The Basement. We support two Indian restaurants, a Chinese, an Italian, a Thai and a couple of Fish and Chip eat-ins. We have local produce with oatcakes, Leatherbritches beer, Dining Room sourdough bread, and some mighty fine beef paste at Nigel’s. The butchery in the town is superb with four to choose from and, essential to me, easy access to game and fish particularly via Peach’s and Hulme’s if you aren’t a hunter/angler yourself. If you want good coffee there are plenty of cafes to choose from depending on the weather, your mood, the scenery… for a good location with the opportunity to enjoy the scenery on the Square – the Flower Cafe or Bramalls, for a nice airy refined setting try the Gallery or Bennett’s, when it’s raining and you need a hug… Gingerbread Cafe or Sticky Fingers.

Thank goodness there’s plenty of good countryside around to walk it all off….. dotted with some fine country pubs with restaurants……. and farm shops… and roadside fresh produce…
