Try Ashbourne First: #7 Country Interiors – an excellent stall for soft furnishings

One of life’s pleasures is strolling around a market and Ashbourne is blessed with two! In this occasional series I wanted to take a look at some of the interesting independent retailers in the town and see what they offer consumers. We should be, need to be, spending more locally and many people don’t explore what Ashbourne’s High Street has to offer enough.

On a Saturday, one of the first market stalls which anyone will see is the one selling linen and soft furnishings right next to the road. What many may not realise is that Country interiors is a market stall, a retail shop and an online business. The market stall is just displaying part of the stock they can access.

One of the reasons we use it is to buy our tea towels. They stock a good range of everyday “standard” tea towels in a gingham check or simpler glass towels in a range of standard colours. The flagship products though are the readymade curtains. Through the online business and the retail outlet they can design and fit blinds and curtains using fabrics from a range of suppliers including Crowson, MJA, Sundour, Simpson Interiors, Richard Barrie and many others. There are curtains and fabric samples on display on the stall and the people on the stall are very knowledgeable and friendly. This is a Staffordshire Moorlands family business established in 1945. As well as curtains you can buy matching tiebacks and cushion covers. The fabric choices change regularly so if you don’t see what you want talk to the team and they can try and bring it for you.

They also have a good selection of duvet covers and pillow cases for children and adults.

With so many fabrics and sizes to choose from it is really difficult to do a fair price comparison. When I looked at the prices by comparison with somewhere like Debenhams website I found that, for the same fabric, the market price was £11 per cushion cover whereas the online price was £14. Tiebacks were broadly the same at around £14 per pair. This is an excellent market stall which needs visiting to appreciate the breadth of stock and the knowledge of the staff.
