Scarthin Books, Cromford


This is the first of what will be four posts from my little wander up north with the accomplice. In some ways, this is the easiest, because it’s actually a bit of a cheat. The café at Scarthin Books is a lovely adjunct to the main attraction, one of the finest new and second-hand bookshops in which I’ve ever had the pleasure of finding myself. Situated in Cromford on the edge of the Peak District, near Matlock (and an easy drive from the M1), Scarthin Books has a well-deserved reputation and visitors will not be disappointed. The range and calibre of volumes is exceptional and the place keeps on revealing little nooks and crannies stuffed with rare or uncommon tomes, including a small collection of antiquaria in the loo.  Alongside this cornucopia of literary joy, the café serves a variety of vegetarian foodstuffs and pretty decent filter coffee.
